Wern Ddu – Update 9/4/26

From Keith E – “It may be wise to plan a alternative route B, with hints of possible waggons and lorries running a go slow crawl on A55 to protest about fuel prices. Watch the news and listen radio etc. May not happen but be prepared…”

The CORRECT “what three words” for the entrance are – Call/home/promotion. The actual range is uphill at 530 01′ 26.46″ N, 30 23′ 46.47″ W. (WTW and Google maps don’t show it.)

Wern Ddu is a privately run range, and therefore NOT subject to the ream of BS which accompany shooting on MoD/RFCA ranges (This alone is a great advantage.)
It’s a 100 metre range with 10 firing points and has to be hired by the day.

Advantages

  • No MoD/RFCA BS – thus you can shoot anything legal: (yes, including all 6.5 cartridges) black powder pistols, shotguns, air guns etc.
  • 10 firing points
  • 100 metres (Dan’s measured it.)
  • Not quite as costly as Sealand
  • No charge for individual lanes
  • Covered firing points, with
  • Seats and solid firing point benches
  • Useable from 09:30 through to 15:30
  • SCCs not required
  • No butts or lookout duties
  • Toilet & hot water available
    Disadvantages
  • To reduce the noise, unmoderated fullbore rifles have to be fired through short tyre tunnels.
  • Ceasefire required when replacing targets
  • Can only be booked by the full day.
  • Parking is a bit limited (Maybe a maximum of 25 cars?)
  • It’s 31 miles south-west of Sealand. (Altcar is 44 miles away)
  • There are no suitable debriefing venues nearby (we’ll see…..)

Above – the range and limited parking area (top right).

The range is top left, with the entrance at the bottom right.

Having had our first three shoots here we’ve ironed out the majority of the snags (very few, as it turned out) but since parking is limited, we still have to ask you to book first.

It was far better than we anticipated.

If you haven’t already been, the car park is up the hill at W3W ///human.surpassed.crispy.
Apple Maps show the track up to it and will guide you in (unfortunately Google maps do not). The track is a little rutted in places but you won’t need AWD, it’s fine in a standard saloon car.

Hoping to attend this coming Saturday – I understand W3W, but my satnav appears not to.
Does this place have a postcode please?
    Thanks

Hi Mike. LL21 9DU is the postcode area but that won’t take you directly to the quarry (from memory thats the farm just south of the entrance). So, head for there on the A494… if coming from the north, it’s soon after Lelo Metal Recycling on your right, the entrance to the quarry is on the right (directly opposite a lay by on your left)… nb the first gate is no entry as it’s the exit. I suggest use the postcode to enable your Sat nav to get close then switch to W3W as you approach the area. Hope to see you there.
