Another UPDATE 04-01-26. Do you want to shoot at Altcar? If so – please read all of this post (there have been several changes)

Thanks to everyone who responded so quickly, I’ve now prepared your PSA ID cards for Altcar. Please collect them at the next shoot – obviously not Altcar !

We are truly sorry that you now have to put up with all this bureaucracy – it’s what’s required for Altcar. For Sealand we took all of this on board ourselves, but since we personally are not going to be at Altcar, we have to hand it on.

[NB: this ONLY refers to Altcar, not any other shoots]

To shoot at Altcar, you must :-

  1. Have two RCOs
  2. Have 1 Qualified First Aider
  3. Have a maximum of 20 shooters (Including above, and this might increase soon)
  4. Have a special PSA membership card
  5. Have your up-to-date SCC with you
  6. Have notified us that you will be shooting a minimum of 5 days before the shoot
  7. Paid by BACS when booking
  8. Be prepared to shoot at a distance not originally planned.
  9. Be aware of your sight settings for various distances
  10. Be prepared for cancellations with little or no notice.
  11. Arrive at the stated time – not later.
  12. Be prepared to do butts and lookout duty.

Note: You cannot just turn up – you HAVE to book as above.

There will be no club guns or ammunition available at Altcar

You will need to know the standing orders – link below –

Some further useful information from Keith Evans

Parking in marked bays, Not on grass or even put a wheel on grass to let a car past.

Civilian vehicle MUST give way to military and range warden vehicles at all times. Also to wait for cadets to pass as the cadets usually walk each side of the roadways.

There is a undocumented but verbal request for civilian club parked vehicles to display on their dashboard their range pass with club on it, this is in case of emergency.

lookout duty is an hour, however note that if another range is being used by military units then the military/cadets provide the lookout cover as we as civilians cannot do lookout duty for the military.

Altcar would not give a 500 or 600 yard without prior notice, sometimes 100 200 or 300 only are changeable.if a club has booked a 500 you may get a 600 as this is decided by altcar 101 club who use the 500 600 for competitions and have their club building at the range.

HME shooting is only available on c range and by prior notice and agreed by Altcar admin, think its min 4 weeks notice they can refuse outright in line with range standing orders.

Bench and chair or shooting table chair may be used but it is requested that the said chair bench type is authorised given the ok by range control first. They will just look at it, that said the bench and chair is responsibility of rco and club using it if anything goes wrong.

if a person arrives on a 300 yard and says he has not shot or adjusted the rifle for the distance then by using increments and load data we can usually get on target withing 3 shots ideally provided we can see a sand splah or thud in the mantlet at worst. on most ranges we can bore sight to get on the frame unless its a straight pull ar15 style or marlin underlever etc.

If a shooter is confident in their set up but cannot get on target for various reasons then we ask them to clear down and arrange to zero set up at say 100 yards on another day. The 3 shot rule Grange impose was born out of Bisley practice at distances greater than 300 yards.ie 500 or 600yards.

BOTTOM Line….excuse the pun…….worth remembering that the wc toilet blocks dont always have bog roll by sunday afternoon. !!! Best wc is near the clay shooting range car park.
