If you have a firearm or shotgun certificate, you should read this.

BASC have produced a paper regarding the performances of the English & Welsh police firearms licensing departments, and it shows graphically what shooters have been saying for years – that the system if often poorly administered, and above all inconsistant.
It’s interesting to see what is said about those forces who administer your certificates: When it comes to satisfaction with the service provided nationally – Out of the 55 firearms licensing departments in England & Wales:
- Cheshire were 3rd best,
- Merseyside 10th,
- Greater Manchester 16th,
- Lancashire 18th,
- North Wales 21st.
Cleveland were best, with Dorset & Northamptonshire sharing the worst spot! This is disappointing, as a few years ago both firearms licensing departments were well regarded.
Monitoring the efficiency of firearms licensing is surely the very thing that the police and Home Office should be doing themselves – rather than having an outside organisation doing it.
